Transgender identity is a mental illness

Many people grew up with the understanding that gender nonconformity was listed in psychiatric manuals, and the idea that a majority of voters share a concern can make it feel like common sense rather than stigma.
The World Health Organisation made this explicit when ICD-11 came into force in 2022: gender incongruence was moved out of the mental disorders chapter entirely and into a sexual health chapter, precisely to end this kind of stigma. The American Psychiatric Association draws the same distinction, separating the distress some trans people experience from trans identity itself, which is not classified as a disorder. Being transgender is a natural variation in human experience, recognised as such by every major medical and scientific body. When political figures repeat the disorder framing anyway, the people who pay for it are trans people trying to hold down a job, access healthcare, or simply get through a day without being told that who they are is a sickness.
What I said at the time:
“International Classification of Diseases that the World Health Organisation 11”
Trans people of all ages who face discrimination, denial of employment, and barriers to healthcare when their identity is publicly framed as a psychiatric disorder.
