Misconception and reality

Not treating also causes irreversible changes

Dr Helen Webberley on Times Radio: the gender debate, with Jo Coburn, Times Radio

What people think

Puberty blockers and hormones are the risky intervention, and doing nothing is the safe, neutral option. If you just wait, nothing irreversible happens.

What is actually true

This is the point I keep coming back to, because it reframes the whole argument. The hormones a young person's own body produces during an unwanted puberty cause exactly the same category of permanent, irreversible change as the hormones we might prescribe. A voice that drops, a brow that sets, breasts that grow, hips that widen: none of that reverses. So the question was never "do we intervene or not?" The question is always which set of irreversible changes does this person have to live with. Inaction is a decision, and it has consequences just as real as any prescription.
