Phalloplasty cannot give a trans man a working penis

Concerns about the functional and sexual outcomes of gender-affirming surgery are raised by some detransitioners and critics, and the question of what surgical outcomes look like is one many people have genuinely not seen addressed.
Phalloplasty is a reconstructive surgical technique with decades of development behind it, and outcomes in terms of sexual function, including orgasm and satisfaction, are documented in the research and described positively by many of the people who have had it. The phrase 'fake penis' does the work of dismissal rather than description: it assumes the goal is to produce something indistinguishable from what a cisgender man was born with, which is not how trans men or their surgeons frame the aim. What the aim actually is varies by person, and surgical technique has advanced considerably, so a sweeping claim about what is or is not possible misrepresents both the procedure and the people living with the results. Trans men who have had phalloplasty deserve to have their bodies and their sexual lives described accurately, not reduced to a punchline that says what they have cannot be real.
Trans men considering or who have had phalloplasty, whose surgical outcomes and sexual lives are dismissed and demeaned.
