Puberty blockers disrupt brain pruning and cognition
Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull said:
“puberty blockers which have a dramatic impact, not just on genitals and sexual and, um, sort of the, the development of fertility, but also on things like pruning the brain when you go through puberty and cognitive development”
Adolescence is a well-documented period of brain development, and the idea that interfering with puberty hormones could affect that development sounds scientifically grounded. The phrase "brain pruning" borrows real neuroscience terminology, making the claim feel authoritative.
The 'brain pruning' claim borrows real neuroscience language and that is precisely what makes it worth taking apart carefully. Synaptic pruning during adolescence is a genuine process, and it is reasonable to ask whether pausing puberty hormones interacts with it. But the peer-reviewed evidence does not show that GnRH analogues cause lasting cognitive harm: the studies most often cited in this argument found small differences in some memory measures, differences that did not persist after puberty resumed. The leap from 'adolescence involves brain development' to 'blockers permanently damage cognition' is not one the literature supports, and repeating it with confident neuroscience vocabulary does not make it so. When a young person and their family hear this claim and step back from a treatment that could relieve serious, documented distress, they are paying the price for a conclusion the science has not reached.
What I said at the time:
“what Kellie's saying there is completely wrong. If you actually, um, look at the, uh, and ask adults, because we're not asking children about sex, we're asking adults who've been through medical transition, "How is your sex life before or after?" And the, the by far the majority will say... "It is so much better."”
Young people with gender dysphoria and their families, who may be frightened away from a treatment that could relieve serious distress, on the basis of a claim the science does not support.
