Dr Helen Webberley on Triggernometry: the trans debate, with Konstantin Kisin, Triggernometry
Doctors who work in trans healthcare must have always known this was their calling, or come to it through ideology rather than medicine. The story of how someone ends up in this field is assumed to be political from the start.
I came to this the way most doctors come to anything that changes them: a patient walked in and needed help, and I didn't know how to give it. What I found when I started looking was two things at once. A field of medicine that was genuinely fascinating, full of ways to support people through something profound. And a system that was failing those same people badly, both in how society treated them and in how medicine did. I didn't set out to be a trans healthcare advocate. I set out to help one woman in Wales. The thousands of people GenderGP has helped since then grew from that single moment of a doctor doing what doctors are supposed to do.
