The Transition Guide

If you are somewhere on the path of transition, or thinking about it, or trying to understand it for someone you love, this pack is for you. It is written for trans people and their families and supporters across the UK and Europe, in plain language, with no gatekeeping and no agenda other than helping you find your footing.

Everything here is free to keep. Download it, share it, return to it when you need it. It is yours.

The pack is made up of four modules, and you can work through them in any order that makes sense for where you are.

  • Social transition covers the everyday changes that do not require a doctor or a lawyer: names, pronouns, presentation, and how to navigate the conversations that come with them.
  • Medical transition explains what hormone therapy and other medical options involve, what the pathways look like in the UK and across Europe, and what to ask when you speak to a clinician.
  • Surgical transition walks through the surgeries some trans people choose, what each one involves, how to access them, and what to think about when weighing those decisions.
  • Legal transition covers changing your name and your documents, what the Gender Recognition Certificate does and does not do, and what legal protections exist for trans people in the UK and EU.

You do not have to be at the beginning. You do not have to know what you want yet. Wherever you are, there is something here that might help.
