Dr Helen Webberley on GB News: puberty blockers and profit, with Ben Leo, GB News
Autism or depression should give doctors pause before providing gender-affirming care. If someone has other things going on, those things need to be resolved first, or they become reasons to say no.
What I was trying to say there is that we have turned the logic completely upside down. A trans person who is also autistic is still a trans person. A trans person who is depressed, often because the world has been genuinely cruel to them, is still a trans person asking for healthcare. We do not tell a diabetic that their anxiety means we cannot treat their diabetes. We do not tell someone with cancer that their autism means we need to wait. But somehow, when the person is trans, every other thing about them becomes a reason to withhold the one thing they came for. The depression is frequently a consequence of the denial, not a reason for more of it. These are real people, and they deserve to be treated as such.
