Gender dysphoria is by definition a mental illness

“Again, by definition gender dysphoria is a mental condition.”
Gender dysphoria does appear in the DSM-5, and many people assume that anything in a psychiatric diagnostic manual is by definition a mental illness, so the claim sounds like a straightforward appeal to medical authority.
Gender dysphoria does appear in the DSM-5, so it is easy to assume that settles the question, but the DSM-5 itself explicitly states that gender nonconformity is not a mental disorder. What the diagnosis describes is the distress that can arise when a person's gender is not recognised or supported, not the fact of being trans. The ICD-11, the World Health Organisation's classification system, went further and moved gender incongruence out of the mental disorders chapter entirely, precisely to separate identity from pathology. When the mental illness framing takes hold in a consulting room or an insurance system, the people who pay for it are trans patients told their need for care is a psychiatric problem rather than a medical one, and young trans people who absorb the message that something is fundamentally wrong with who they are.
What I said at the time:
“Transgender children or children who are questioning their gender are not automatically vulnerable, but this kind of conversation makes them extremely vulnerable and transgender people are not suffering from a mental illness and the fact that you think that or say that on on television is cruel and unkind.”
Trans people and their families who are told that seeking gender-affirming care is equivalent to treating a mental illness, which can be used to argue the care itself is inappropriate.
