Trans men are biological women

“Well they are women aren't they? They are biological women.”
It is delivered as the plain unarguable fact, and most viewers have never been asked to notice that the word sex covers several different things that do not always point the same way.
Sex in humans is not a single characteristic: it is chromosomes, hormone levels, gonads, internal anatomy, external anatomy and secondary characteristics, and in a trans man on testosterone several of those have shifted significantly. What the phrase 'biological woman' usually means, when unpacked, is natal sex, meaning the sex recorded at birth, and saying that would at least be accurate. Collapsing it into a statement about biology, as though biology is one simple thing that always points one way, mistakes a category for a fact. The cost of that mistake lands on trans men, whose lives, medical records and legal documents are all conducted as men, and who are told in passing that their existence is a category error.
