Misconception and reality

Sex characteristics do not sort neatly into two categories

What people think

Biology divides cleanly into two categories: male and female. Chromosomes, hormones, reproductive organs, genitals, the assumption is that each of these lines up neatly on one side or the other, and that the line between them is fixed and obvious.

What is actually true

What I was pointing to there is something the science has been clear on for a long time: none of those systems actually work that way. Chromosomes vary beyond XX and XY. Hormone levels overlap across the population in ways that make any single threshold arbitrary. Reproductive anatomy and external genitalia exist on a spectrum, not a binary. And gender identity, the felt, lived sense of who you are, has never mapped onto any of those physical markers in a simple one-to-one way. The binary is a useful shorthand that most people fit well enough, but it was never a complete description of human biology. When we build policy, law, or sport regulation on the assumption that it is, we end up with rules that cannot survive contact with actual human bodies.
