Dr Helen Webberley on LBC: trans healthcare, with Tom Swarbrick, LBC
I don't have a problem with trans adults. It's the children I worry about. Children are too young to know, and this is something that happens later in life, not in childhood.
Every transgender adult was once a transgender child. That is not a political position, it is just arithmetic. The identity does not begin at eighteen: it begins at the beginning, whether or not the child had the language for it, whether or not anyone around them understood what they were experiencing. When people say they support trans adults but not trans children, they are drawing a line that does not exist in real life. The adult they are happy to accept was that child they are worried about. You cannot have one without the other.
