Misconception and reality

One detransition story does not represent everyone

Dr Helen Webberley on LBC: trans healthcare, with Tom Swarbrick, LBC

What people think

Detransition stories prove that gender-affirming care gets it wrong. If someone regrets transitioning, or comes to realise they are gay rather than trans, that is evidence the whole approach is flawed and that many people are being led down the wrong path.

What is actually true

What I keep coming back to is the sheer weight of the majority who are being drowned out by a single story. When I think of everyone I have heard from over the years, the people who detransition or who come to understand themselves differently are a small fraction, and their experiences deserve respect. But they cannot be allowed to stand in for the 98 or 99 percent of people who accessed care, got what they needed, and are living well. It is not that the one story is unimportant. It is that using it to define the whole picture is a distortion, and the people it harms most are the ones quietly getting on with their lives, glad they had access to care at all.

Whatever brought you here, I'm glad you came. Tell me what is on your mind and we can talk it through.
