Misconception and reality

Why more young people are coming forward now

Dr Helen Webberley on LBC: trans healthcare, with Tom Swarbrick, LBC

What people think

More young people are transgender now than ever before. Something is causing a sudden surge, whether that is social contagion, online influence, or a trend that will pass. The numbers are rising, so something must have gone wrong.

What is actually true

What I was trying to say there is that the numbers are not rising because more people are becoming trans. They are rising because more people finally have the words for something they always were. I have spoken with so many people who spent decades knowing something was different about them, carrying that quietly, with no language and no map. The language exists now. The visibility exists now. Young people today can name what they feel, and so they come forward. That is not a crisis. That is progress.

Whatever brought you here, I'm glad you came. Tell me what is on your mind and we can talk it through.
