Disagreement is understandable, but viciousness toward a minority is not

Dr Helen Webberley on Robby Starbuck: transition and children, Robby Starbuck

What people think

If you push back on trans identities, you must be engaging in a serious, reasonable debate. The people doing it loudest are simply asking hard questions that deserve answers.

What is actually true

I do try to separate disagreement from hatred, because they are genuinely different things. Someone who has never met a trans person and finds it hard to understand is in a different place from someone who is actively vicious toward a minority group. What I find hard to sit with is the escalating loudness of voices that don't just question the politics but question whether trans people should exist at all. Trans identities are real. They have been real across cultures and across centuries. The hate that comes with the current noise is not a debate position. It is cruelty directed at people who are simply trying to live.

Whatever brought you here, I'm glad you came. Tell me what is on your mind and we can talk it through.
