Dr Helen Webberley on The Dr Hilary Show: ten years of GenderGP, with Dr Hilary Jones, The Dr Hilary Show
Most people assume that what trans people need is better laws or more clinical services. The human side of it, just how people treat each other day to day, gets overlooked.
When I hear Siobhan speak, I'm reminded that the thing people are most afraid of isn't a policy or a waiting list. It's the moment they tell someone and that person reacts badly. So many people I've spoken with over the years are still not out, not because they don't know who they are, but because they've watched what happened to someone else and decided the risk isn't worth it. Losing a job. Being pushed out. Being bullied somewhere you have to show up every day. That fear is entirely rational, and it belongs to the people who created it, not to the person carrying it. What Siobhan is describing isn't a grand ask. It's just: listen before you judge. Know a little about someone before you decide what they are. That's not a political position. It's just decency.
