Dr Helen Webberley on The Dr Hilary Show: ten years of GenderGP, with Dr Hilary Jones, The Dr Hilary Show
A ban on puberty blockers means young trans people can simply wait a little longer and pick things up when the time is right. There's no real urgency, and the pause gives everyone a chance to be sure.
What I was trying to say there is that puberty does not wait for politics. Every month a trans girl spends going through a male puberty is a month of permanent, irreversible change, and I have sat with parents who are utterly distraught watching it happen to their child while the paperwork catches up. The ban was not driven by evidence: the Endocrine Society and WPATH have decades of peer-reviewed research behind the use of puberty blockers in trans young people. What drove it was fear and political pressure, and the cost of that is being paid by children, not by politicians.
