Misconception and reality

A public-generated list of fears is now harming real children

Dr Helen Webberley on GB News: puberty blockers, with Lucy Johnston, GBNews

What people think

The concerns about puberty blockers, infertility, regret, changing minds, come from the medical evidence. They are the considered conclusions of doctors and researchers who have looked at the data and found the risks too great.

What is actually true

That list was not built by clinicians. It was built by public anxiety, and there is a difference. What the research actually shows is that gender-affirming care matters, and that withholding it causes harm. The consequence of treating public fear as though it were medical consensus is that every trans child in this country now goes through the wrong puberty, in full, with all the permanent changes that brings, not because the evidence demanded it, but because nobody stopped to ask who wrote the list. That is not caution. That is a policy built on the wrong foundation, and real children are paying for it.
