Dr Helen Webberley on GB News: puberty blockers, with Lucy Johnston, GBNews
The risks of puberty blockers and gender-affirming care are the real concern here. A young person who detransitions and is left with a changed body is the harm we should be talking about.
What I was trying to say there is that the very same harms people list when arguing against care, the deep voice, the sexual dysfunction, the depression, are happening right now to trans young people who are being denied it. Every trans feminine child going through an unwanted puberty is acquiring a deep voice that will stay with them for life. That is a permanent, irreversible change, and it is happening because we withheld care, not because we provided it. I find it genuinely painful that this does not seem to register. The distress of gender dysphoria is real, it is serious, and it does not become less real because the person experiencing it is trans. Reporters tell me they have spoken to a detransitioner, and I understand why that story travels. But please, go and speak to a hundred trans people too. Hear what it costs to go through the wrong puberty. Hear what it costs to wait years for care that never comes. That is also a story, and it deserves to be told.
