Misconception and reality

What the Supreme Court ruling actually said

What people think

The Supreme Court ruling took rights away from trans women. It said trans women are not women, and that the Equality Act no longer protects them.

What is actually true

What the Supreme Court actually did was much narrower than the headlines suggested. It was asked to clarify what "sex" means in one specific part of the Equality Act, because the Act protects both sex and gender and there was genuine legal ambiguity about how those terms related to each other. The Court also said clearly that trans women are women and that they retain the right to seek protection under the Equality Act as women. That is not what the flags and the front pages were celebrating. The ruling did not negate trans women's identity, and trans men were not mentioned at all. What I keep coming back to is this: a legal clarification about a definition is not the same as a statement about who someone is, and the people who told you otherwise were not reading the judgment.
