Misconception and reality

The same drug is fine for cisgender children but not trans children

Dr Helen Webberley on GB News: puberty blockers, with Lucy Johnston, GBNews

What people think

Puberty blockers are too risky and untested to give to trans children. The concerns about their effects are serious enough that prescribing them is irresponsible.

What is actually true

The drug is the same one. The same puberty blocker, the same dose, the same indication: stopping puberty. It has been prescribed to cisgender children with precocious puberty for decades, and nobody calls for a ban on that. The risks being raised in the trans context simply do not materialise in the cisgender context, because they are not real risks of the drug. What that tells me is that the concern was never really about the medication. It was about the children.
