Dr Helen Webberley on GB News: puberty blockers, with Lucy Johnston, GBNews
The concerns being raised about trans people, especially around children, are new, evidence-based, and different in kind from anything we've seen before. The studies don't exist, the risks are real, and this time the worry is justified.
I've watched this pattern before, and so has anyone old enough to remember what was said about gay people. Don't mention them in front of children. Don't sit next to one on the bus. The language of contamination, of innocent minds being corrupted, of a threat that couldn't quite be named but had to be stopped. We said all of that, and we were wrong, and we know we were wrong. Now the same machinery is running again, pointed at trans people, and the claims are just as thin. There are no studies showing that affirming a trans child causes harm. There is no evidence base behind the panic. What there is, is a very old script being read from again.
