Misconception and reality

Protecting people from bad actors, not from groups

Dr Helen Webberley on GB News: puberty blockers, with Lucy Johnston, GBNews

What people think

Trans people in shared spaces are a safety risk that justifies treating the whole group differently. The argument sounds like it's about protection, but it's really about suspicion directed at one category of people.

What is actually true

What I was trying to say there is that protection has to be about behaviour, not identity. The moment we start treating any group as inherently more likely to produce bad actors, whether that group is defined by race, religion, sexuality, or gender, we have stopped talking about safety and started talking about prejudice. Trans people are not a threat category. Some people do bad things. Those people come from every corner of society, and the law exists to deal with them. Using the possibility of bad behaviour to justify suspicion of an entire group is not a safeguarding argument. It is discrimination with a safeguarding label on it.

Whatever brought you here, I'm glad you came. Tell me what is on your mind and we can talk it through.
