Misconception and reality

Design toilets around what is in them, not who is allowed in

Dr Helen Webberley on Heretics: the gender debate, with Andrew Gold, Heretics

What people think

The toilet debate is about protecting women from trans people. If you want women to be safe, you keep trans women out.

What is actually true

The sign on the door has never actually told us what is behind it, and that is the problem I keep coming back to. If we labelled toilets by what is in them, a cubicle, a urinal, a seated toilet, a squatting toilet, we would solve the access question and the safety question at the same time, for everyone. And if we do insist on a women's space, then I think we have to mean it: all women, including trans women, because a trans woman is a woman. That is not a complicated position. It is just a consistent one.

Whatever brought you here, I'm glad you came. Tell me what is on your mind and we can talk it through.
