Dr Helen Webberley on Heretics: the gender debate, with Andrew Gold, Heretics
Whether trans people really exist is still an open question, one that reasonable people can land on either side of. The debate itself is the proof that nothing has been settled.
We settled this. Not in a seminar, not in a think piece, but in law. The Gender Recognition Act exists. Gender reassignment is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act. You do not write legal protections for people you have decided are not real. As a society, we have already answered the question, and the answer was yes. What I find so striking is that people can spend an hour debating the existence of trans people while the statute book quietly confirms it. The debate has moved on, even if the conversation hasn't caught up.
