Dr Helen Webberley on Heretics: the gender debate, with Andrew Gold, Heretics
Gender medicine is a specialist world, something that only certain doctors in certain places ever encounter. Most of us go our whole careers without it touching us.
I was a GP in South Wales, just doing what GPs do, when a trans woman walked into my surgery and asked if I could help her. I had no training, no chapter in any textbook I'd been given, no protocol to follow. What I had was a patient in front of me who needed care, and a genuine desire to help. That moment changed the direction of my life. Not because it was extraordinary, but because it was so ordinary: a person, a doctor, a question. The medicine followed from there.
