Misconception and reality

Gender incongruence is as real as cancer or diabetes

Dr Helen Webberley on Heretics: the gender debate, with Andrew Gold, Heretics

What people think

Gender incongruence is a matter of opinion or belief, not a medical reality. Doctors who support trans people are ideologically motivated, and any doctor who claims certainty about it is being reckless or dishonest.

What is actually true

I have the same certainty about gender incongruence that I have about cancer or diabetes. It exists. I have seen it, I have listened to people who live with it, and the evidence is there. The question that actually matters is not whether it exists but what we do about it, the same question we ask about any other condition: how do we help this person live the best life? Framing my certainty as a red flag is a way of avoiding that question, and I am not going to let it work.

Whatever brought you here, I'm glad you came. Tell me what is on your mind and we can talk it through.
