Dr Helen Webberley on Heretics: the gender debate, with Andrew Gold, Heretics
A surgically made vagina is somehow lesser, something to be compared unfavourably, even mocked. That a person's body, and the courage it took to get there, is fair game for ridicule.
When I came across that kind of mockery, it stopped me cold. Someone had gone through something profound to have a body that felt right, and the response was to sneer at it. The cruelty of that is not subtle. A vagina that was made with care and intention is not a consolation prize: it is somebody's body, and it belongs to them completely. What I keep coming back to is how much contempt it takes to look at another person's anatomy and decide yours is superior. That is not a political position. It is just unkindness, and we should be able to say so plainly.
