Misconception and reality

One person's story should not set everyone's options

Dr Helen Webberley on Heretics: the gender debate, with Andrew Gold, Heretics

What people think

If one person regretted transitioning, that experience should shape what every other trans person is allowed to do. One story, told loudly enough, becomes the rule for everyone.

What is actually true

I said it then and I'll say it again: Ritchie Heron's experience belongs to Ritchie Heron. It deserves to be heard, taken seriously, and treated with respect. But no single person's story should close doors for the thousands of others whose lives look completely different. That is not how we make decisions in any other area of medicine, and there is no good reason to make it the rule here. Trans people are not a monolith, and the options available to them should not be decided by the loudest cautionary tale in the room.

Whatever brought you here, I'm glad you came. Tell me what is on your mind and we can talk it through.
