Dr Helen Webberley on Heretics: the gender debate, with Andrew Gold, Heretics
The rare cases of regret are the ones that tell us the most about gender-affirming care. When something goes wrong, it deserves attention, and that attention shapes what we think the whole picture looks like.
What I keep coming back to is the 97 percent. Ninety-seven percent of people who received gender-affirming care did not regret it. They are out there living fuller, happier lives, and most of them are not making documentaries or giving interviews, because they are just getting on with things. That is not a silence we should mistake for absence. The loudest stories are not always the most representative ones, and building policy, or even just forming an opinion, around the loudest three percent means leaving the other ninety-seven behind. I have heard from so many people who simply want to say thank you: thank you for seeing me, thank you for not making me fight for my own existence. Those voices deserve to be part of this conversation too.
