Dr Helen Webberley on Heretics: the gender debate, with Andrew Gold, Heretics
Trans women's lives are defined by struggle, controversy, and the debate surrounding them. The story we hear most often is one of conflict, legislation, and protest, and it is easy to absorb the idea that being a trans woman must mean living in the middle of all that noise.
What I actually see, and what I have seen for years, is something far quieter and far more powerful than any debate. There are so many beautiful, happy, wonderful trans women living their best lives, and they are not waiting for the argument to be settled before they get on with it. They are the evidence. Not evidence in the way a study is evidence, but in the way a life is: visible, full, and its own answer. The debate exists because some people have a problem. The trans women living well? They mostly just have a life.
