What persistent gender identity looks like in a child

Dr Helen Webberley on Heretics: the gender debate, with Andrew Gold, Heretics

What people think

Trans children come to it suddenly, as a phase or a passing whim, and parents are being asked to act on something that appeared out of nowhere one day.

What is actually true

What I see, again and again, is children who have been saying the same thing for as long as anyone can remember. Not a declaration that arrived one morning, but years of quiet, consistent, sometimes frustrated insistence: stop calling me a girl, I'm a boy. By the time a family is asking for help, the child has usually already been asking to be seen for most of their life. That persistence is not a symptom of something going wrong. It is the clearest signal we have that something is very right about what this child knows about themselves.

Whatever brought you here, I'm glad you came. Tell me what is on your mind and we can talk it through.
