Dr Helen Webberley on LBC: trans healthcare, with Tom Swarbrick, LBC
Puberty blockers for trans children are experimental and controversial. When a child is given them to pause an unwanted puberty, it is treated as a radical and dangerous step that demands public scrutiny.
The same medication, used for the same purpose, attracts no headlines at all when a six-year-old is given it to pause a puberty that arrived far too early. Precocious puberty is treated as a medical problem, and blockers are the obvious, uncontroversial answer. The moment the reason is gender rather than timing, suddenly it becomes a national debate. The drug has not changed. The principle has not changed. Only the child has changed. That inconsistency is worth sitting with, because it tells you that the outrage was never really about the medicine.
