What a transgender child actually faces without intervention

Dr Helen Webberley on LBC: trans healthcare, with Tom Swarbrick, LBC

What people think

Letting a trans child go through the puberty assigned to them is the safe, neutral option. Intervening is the risk; doing nothing is just waiting to see.

What is actually true

Doing nothing is not neutral. I've spoken with so many trans adults who describe the years they spent watching their bodies change in ways they never wanted, and then the years after that spent trying to undo what puberty did. The broken voice, the facial hair, the Adam's apple: these are not abstract medical concerns, they are things people grieve, things that cost thousands of pounds and years of effort to address, and some of them cannot be fully reversed at all. We already accept that early puberty in a child who isn't ready for it is worth pausing. The question is why we apply that logic so readily in one context and refuse it in another, when the distress in front of us is just as real.

Whatever brought you here, I'm glad you came. Tell me what is on your mind and we can talk it through.
