Dr Helen Webberley on LBC: trans healthcare, with Tom Swarbrick, LBC
Most people assume that "proper medical care" for a trans child means caution, waiting, and doing as little as possible for as long as possible. That the responsible thing is to hold back.
I'd want exactly the same for a trans child as I'd want for any child: care that actually works. That means puberty blockers to pause an unwanted puberty while there is still time, gender-affirming hormones when the moment is right, and surgery if it's needed. That's not radical. That's medicine doing what medicine is supposed to do. The idea that withholding treatment is the safe option has it exactly backwards: every month of an unwanted puberty is a permanent change, and no amount of care later can undo it.
