Trans people face real disadvantage that nobody is debating

Dr Helen Webberley on Robby Starbuck: transition and children, Robby Starbuck

What people think

The debate about trans people is really about fairness and protection. The concern is that trans people are gaining something, taking something, or being given an advantage that others don't have.

What is actually true

What I was trying to say in that moment is that the conversation is pointing in entirely the wrong direction. Trans people are not winning. They are losing, in ways that are measurable and real: in classrooms, in job interviews, in relationships, in the basic experience of being seen as a full human being. And the programmes that frame trans existence as a threat or a controversy are part of what makes that worse. I keep asking myself why we are not debating that. Why aren't we talking about how to make schools safer, workplaces more open, sport more welcoming? Those are questions with answers. Those are problems we could actually solve.

Whatever brought you here, I'm glad you came. Tell me what is on your mind and we can talk it through.
