Misconception and reality

What the research actually shows about gender affirming care outcomes

Dr Helen Webberley on Robby Starbuck: transition and children, Robby Starbuck

What people think

Gender-affirming care leaves young people worse off: infertile, sexually impaired, and full of regret. The people raising these concerns are just being realistic about the evidence, and the medical community hasn't actually looked at what happens to patients long-term.

What is actually true

This is exactly what medical research is for, and when you look at what it shows, the picture is clear. The overwhelming body of outcome data on people who received puberty blockers and gender-affirming hormones finds that they are happier, healthier, and more comfortable in their own bodies. That is not ideology. That is how medicine works: you follow the patients, you look at what happens, and you go where the evidence leads. Concern for someone's fertility or sexual function is not wrong in itself, but when that concern is used to override what the research actually shows, it stops being care and starts being something else.
